CCP document with some WoD Online details

Forum goer Cahalith over on the Vampire Planet forums found this tidbit.. I'll quote him as he can explain:
So, according to this interesting document I found shamelessly lurking on the Eve Online forums, it looks like we should be expecting WoDO by 2010. Of course, this document is dated July '08, months before CCP focused on Eve Online, as stated by its CEO during last november Fanfest, so I think we should take into account a few months of delay, making the final release date around early 2011, but, hell, I can be wrong. Anyway, Word of God says WoD will be launched in 2010. I guess we should make a party or something!
Now, please, go to page 13, near the end. I know, they might be only explaining the P&P setting, but they might as well be explaing the MMO one. Vampires, werewolves and mages? And it looks like we won't be able to play as humans. Ok, now I'm maybe reading too much into it.
Harl: On page 24 states the following "CCP is currently working on new projects, the largest of which is World of Darkness, a MMOG that is scheduled to launch 2010."; EDIT: Also I can confirm this is not 'leaked' simply a public document by CCP.

I can tell you, at best, 2010 will be the most recent we will see this game released. It is to early for any kind of beta sign up, they are not even in full production until this March.

I have a hard time imaging how this will work? It can not function as WAR or WOW, with main focus of hack and Slash, kill get exp, become more powerful. Also Vamps and wolfs should not be enemies or something like that. The setting is neutral toward the supernatural aspect.
So how? A game thats about being a monster, politics, intruige, some hard pumped action, dark secrets and mysteries....
How will this be solved. it must be totally different from any MMORPG ever made, not even be remotely like anything seen, in design and function of the system.
And the supernatural as main playable character? Then there must be hundreds upon hundreds of human npc's.
I have high hopes for this, but I dont understand how it will remotely resemble anything like the pen and paper game, I dont want anything more like Vampire redemtion and bloodline that was just a bunch of kill the enemies....

And the true question is... ¿how will the game deal with the day/night cycle? I mean... vampires can only move at night, but werewolves and mages can act during day and/or night. So... ¿will there be only night in the game? (I hope not, that's not realistic or inmersive)
What I would do about this is to create a day/night cycle with longer nights than days (about 3 or 4 hours of night per each hour of daylight) and when the sun rises, the vampires characters disappear (they're supposed to leave and sleep) and are replaced by ghoul charactesr (which the player creates at the same time as the vampire character and which advances exactly at the same time as the vampire character as if they were the same... but with different abilities) and during the day is the ghoul character the one who plays. I think it would be fun and easy to implement.

@Selenio Totally agree, there must be an in game night/day cycle, or such thick foggy dark clouds that block sun. dont know if there is an in game cycle like 4hrs night 4 hrs day, every RL day will mean 3 days in game. you dont really need to fastforward time that way. So I dont know maybe just like your way instead of 12d/12n , 8d/16n could be fine 8am to 4pm daylight. But how will these times will place in RL daytime. 8hrs of resting may include real night time , so when the real sun rise, game night begins... For ghoul implementation, could be nice and even with an AI we can feed from ghoul at nights too...
Hope that game aint be a silly hack n slash game, I want deep story and darkness, mysteries... like a simulation Second Life/Sims but including more supernatural events and characters...

Nope, its wrong. By default you need 2 factions, 1 - the vampires, werewolves etc, 2- humans with their vampire hunters, clerics, crusaders etc. And it must be in dark ages. The day/night cicle should be like 4 hours night/4hours day. Vampires should be able to travel in daytime as long as they stay in the shadow, direct sunlight will kill them. Special bonusses in the night/day for the factions too. From this you can evolve to whatever you want, but those 2 factions battling together should be the default, without a constant battle, there is no hate, there is no future, without a battle its nothing. I would pay 2x times of what I pay today for a mmo for a mmo like this one, no joke. And I have also friends who would do the same thing.

If this goes into a hack and slash, vamps vs werewolfs and so forth... This is not a WoD mmorpg, and just something that uses its name, and yet another H&S game doig everything the same as all other games of the same type.....

Aside from new world old world setting I am also curisous about how they are going to seperate the politics such as the cammerilla sabbat and anarchs. Not only do you have that uneasy neutrality between the races but there is all the infighting as well.

Malkav, in the new world of darkness there are only 5 base clans and the cammerilla and sabbot no longer exist. Its mostly just a bunch of loose alliances for the most part without the 'good' vs 'evil' factions fighting for control.

Vampires and werewolves on the same ide is ridiculous. Vamps and mages sure, but were's wouldn't have any problems with mages. Three types, three factions sounds more realistic. Maybe no faction and everyone can just kill everyone, after all mages and vamps kill each other all the time.

About fucking time. We've been waiting for this every since that rumor of an Apocalypse variant online back in like 99'. Having an MMO with vampires and werewolf predating the butchery that is Requiem would put WOD back on top. Who ever is running this company needs to get this into gear before the dust that WOD has become is blown away by the winds of change.

As an EVE player and a fan of WW WOD, I have 110% faith that CCP can pull it off and not be a hack and slash. EVE itself smashes through most MMO conventions.

Pretty sure a successful mmorpg would have free for all; it just makes sense. I can't wait, i'll be standing in line to Alpha for this one. Night/day cycling is a must, very important that daytime be condensed or workable for vamps. CCP should really get on the stick now that Eve is out and functional...especially after the recent release of Underworld III: rise of the lycans....i can only imagine the scope and effect of the game. I like the idea of having a ghoul in your stead that acts as your vanguard in your daylight absence...good 1. Can't wait!!!

Hate to break it to you Valdemar, but this game will be Requiem/new WoD, White Wolf no longer produce anything new to do with the old WoD except for the occasional card game booster pack. And to answer who is running the company: the company that owns EVE Online is, they bought White Wolf years ago, so WoD online will happen no matter what.
WoD definitely isn't being 'blown away' that's for sure, the gaming communites I know are all still playing both old and new WoD games, with sometimes 50 people showing up to LARP in Vancouver even.

Just skimmed through the comments so i dont know if anyone suggested this or not but i play a variety of pc games and i have played vampire-masquerade and thought it was great. Recently i played Fallout 3 and absolutely love the way the map works and terrain detail how you talk to various characters, sneaking, lockpicking, and i could go on and on. but maby someone at white wolf will see my post and think of maby using an engine like that when developing this new game. i could only imagine the possibilities of a freeroam type vampire game. but just my opinion.

@housley: i would prefer the fallout 3 engine too but i read they are going to use an engine close to the one used in eve. Me as a german, where WOD still has a huge crowd of people loving it, I cannot wait to see this game, i am sure it will blow us away as i see the difference between those time-waste-kiddie-games like WoW is... the WoD and its concept will make me run to the store and get it when released, even me as someone who laughs at those mostly unemployed or underage people waiting hours in front of the store to get their wrath of shit king. I would kill for WoD mmo, so stay away my dear friends ;)

indeed, it would be fanstastic if they were to listen to pretty much every fan out there, and take it back to the days of VT masquerade, and scrap the hell spam that was Requiem.
However, i do doubt they will do this, Requiem must make some money, so surely they wont reprint Masquerade just for the sake on an MMO

Scanning many different forums discussing the above topics, the most frequent consensus I have seen for the mmo is to not focus on combat. I hope that CCP will hear this request, and if they do, I feel we are at least assured of some degree of quality in the finished product.
But DAMN, it would be awesome if there were changelings in it!

I have played all types of MMOs and got hooked with table VTM i have played both games and became very discouraged with Requiem. I would love to see this based in the Dark Ages or off VTM but i highly doubt it but the one thing they could do is add a few of those lil talked about abilities like Diablerie. i seriously doubt that will be included in any game put out but as i was normally the one playing the evil vampire in table top i tend to lean toward the evil side of things.
but that does bring up an interesting question of how are they going to do reputation in certain cities. will the story line vary depending on what character you create. and will there be a "good or evil nature"
i have waited for this game to come out since i first got into VTM and MMOs i certainly hope it is not a disappointment.

As a long time fan of WoD i'm to wondering how they are going to make this all work.
Are they going to do it hack and slash like in so many MMO's (WoW, Warhammer, LoTRo) or are they going to go along a similiar path like Eve-Online training skills in RT to get stronger, or make a combination of these.
Having played several MMO's for several years including WoW, LoTRo and Eve-Online, i defo hope not its going to be a hack and slash type like WoW etc there's to many of those already and tends to get boring.
On the other hand making it progress like Eve-Online could make it less intresting to others.
From my point of view a combination of the 2 would perhaps be new and refreshing style of gameplay.
Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I began playing EvE with intent to study how CCP runs its MMOs. EvE is very unique and has the level of PvP - and a high degree of "Life sucks, get used to it." - that would be required for WoD to have any hope of being good.
The way they do skills in EvE absolutely lends itself to Vampires - growing stronger over time (Getting older). The only question to me is how will they handle permanent death, like diablerie and such. Guess thats the real question.
As far as the engine, rumor has been about for a long time now that the Ambulation engine they are working on for EvE and will be stress testing on there will be the engine for WoD. I suspect we won't see WoD take any forward progress until Ambulation is firmly and solidly in use on EvE.

Thus far for what I've pulled out of these comments here, is that many people are eager to whine beforehand based on their own assumptions of what they think will, or won't, happen. I've been playin VtM, and requiem and both of them have their pro's and cons. I really hope that this game will be based on Requiem more than on old masquerade, since old masquerade (content-wise) just got out of hand. Kindred of the [insert-continent-here] made the typical gothic-romantic vampire pretty messy, all those semi-godlike beings in comparison to say, european ancillae or even antediluvians.
Requiem fixed this by making it less separation between certain sects (Camarilla / Sabbat) or good and evil, but in the meantime smashed away some pretty nifty lore and background for different clans. It is double edged sword for it leaves much leeway for your own imaginations but as far as this new generation of wow-gamers go, they probably ditch it for D&D 4th edition because you don't need imagination to play such heavy-setup board games (I dislike saying RPG and D&D 4th edition in same sentence)
Anyway, I believe that CCP will follow the EVEs wake by making the division between different factions more obscure and letting players themselves decide whether or not to be good or evil or something in between. It's all left to be seen.
That's my two cents. Cheers.

Ok I am looking twards this with hopeful eyes.
For the pvp I like the vampires vs werewolves. I however, think that we should have gain some favor for the other facton. I think that the amaranth thing is a good idea. I would like to see the iconic NPC's in the game. As far as the day and night thing I hope for many alternatives for the game. Perhaps going in the shadows of the day. I only see one preoblem with that and that is indirect sunlight. Does it not hurt the vampires still. I think while the day is being cycled why not have a arangement or underground type thing to acomplish.
The werewolves will be intresting to see

WOD won't have a day/night cycle, it puts too much restriction on the game. They will probably go Requiem...as it's p.r. for the p&p they are currently selling. Hopefully they don't f* up like DDO did and make it city only. Or screw up like WoW did and most games...and make you run everywhere....Nothing worse than the run time sink... Most likely it will be a hybrid of games that are out now, with graphics and the horror mmo angle that's reasonably new.
Obviously this is all speculation, so tear it apart as needed for your neurosis...Also if they try an "innovative" combat system...it's got a 90% chance of flopping horribly. Look at AoC, WHO, and Chronicles of the Spellborn....My God they all have tanked horribly because of various mistakes made and new and unfamiliar and Restrictive combat systems....Most people don't want to play a joystick game on a key board so, they should ditch reticles systems...The old saying that will be relevant until the end of time...."If it ain't broke, don't fix it."...There is a reason WoW clones are successful...at least in the use of Highly flexible UIs...I almost Always hate the standard UI. If it's not flexible...I usually quit the game. I won't play a game that I can't play intuitively and comfortably...I don't care how good the graphics or game are.
WoW is lame in many ways, but their UI has not been topped. That flexibility built into the UI guaranteess that at least 1 major component of game play is enjoyable for everyone....Granted the rest of the game is rather tedious and tiresome...
Just my 2 cents...take it as you will. Some here won't like it regardless of how painstakingly exact and faithful it is to PnP WoD. Just play it when it comes out, as another realm in the PnP version of the game...with graphics and a keyboard/mouse, lol.

I personally expect they will use a mixed system, basic skill advancment the same as in eve, but skill jumps from items or diablerie. The RT skill advancment system is made for wod. Also they will I am sure stick to req, it is the only way to allow for gen advancment if they decide not to include diblerie.
Definately not dark ages. The rumor I heard is that the city will be set somewhere in new england. There should be more to it than just a city, but the new england thing is all I have heard about so far.
As far as travel is concerned... they have so many options on travle it is insane... cars, motorcycles, buses, monorails, subways, trains, high celerity, heck even horses if it is set in a city that has mounted police. So no worries on travel.
My hope though... though I think it a vain one... is that it be set in the masquerade, there is so much history that is in masquerade, so many charachters... it would be intense for all the old pen and paper players. Plus of course clearly defined and multitudinous factions, you could have pretty much a hundred factions with just vampire alone in old wod.
Oh, and as far as places in the game where pvp should not be allowed? how bout Elyseum? you swing at someone and a dozen whips appear to beat the tar out of you?

Maybe someone should buy the rights to the old WoD and release a game based around that. As for the day/night aspect, What I have seen says that different servers will be different cities in the same world. So Vamps who can only play at certain times can play in a city that is night at the time they can play.

Oh I greatly hope it will be old WOD. The Apocalypse had so much more going for it. Also I think the old WOD has a more devoted following. But I fear the old WOD is gone forever because White Wolf is a buisness and they want to make money so they would never alow any one to make a game that didn't get people to buy there new books. :( Also they will never give up the rights to the old stuff, not for any price. (It still makes them money too when some one buys the used books from online stores.)

Of course its the nWoD, its is obvious and about as confirmed as CCP can make it.
The system wil very likely not be like WoW and those kind and more like EvE, ccp would never go into making something like that.
And we still do not know if supers really are going to make an apperance.
The info is very airtight, as is normal from CCp and White Wolf.
Probably will this be a very unique makeup for an MMORPG, like the new final fantasy MMORPG wil be, with no leveling system, and exp whatsoever.

I think this could be the coolest MMO ever if done properly. The engine doesn't need to be any better than WoW's, the design of the gameplay will be more important. I see 4 basic classes: Vampires, Lychen, Slayers, and Hunters. Slayers and hunters would be humans who obviously slay vampires and hunt werewolves. Progress would come through real-time accumulation of skills and wealth. Elimination of the mind-numbing grind is essential. It would be super-cool if the classes would be required to band together to raid the lairs of their enemy. But above all, KILL THE GRINDING. If I pay a monthly fee to play, my character should grow stronger every month, whether I log on or not. Playing a lot should speed up the progress, but passive progression is what could set this game apart. Put an emphasis on crafting and accumulation of wealth over combat, add in permanent character deaths (with and inheritance component for your next character), and this thing could kick serious ass.

Implementing night and day would be essential and easy to do. All classes would be able to develop networks of familiars that would do their bidding and add to their wealth. This would allow the vampire to do things during the day. My vision of this game would require a huge number of NPC's in the city, I don't know if that would be a programming and bandwidth problem or not. In my game, destroying enemy players would be the ultimate challenge with the greatest reward, but of course NPC quest lines would exist as well. I hope the developers concentrate on game immersion and free movement. Build an in-game stock market and banking system so that player's wealth grows passively. Whatever they come up with, I'm definitely going to try this game.

I have been waiting for years for a game like this to come into its sweet existance. I have played, the pen and paper version till i would passout with friends and family, and do have high hopes for the game. I do hope that they include all the clans, and the diffrent factions, camerilla and sabbat and the neutrals of course. Along with Mages, Werewolves, Hunters and just about any thing else that was in the games. I do not mind if it was somewhat wow based like a hack and slash, but i do think that single and group based instances would be key for the lone player to have thier fun, and those who seek to travel in coteries, their day as well.

Ever since I found about about this game (about a year ago) I literally have sent an email to CCP and White-Wolf admins asking for any kind of information as well as my beta test key of course. But it looks like they are keeping this pretty hush hush. I would have thought by now to at least see some concept art, or any kind of rough framework of the game...if nothing more than to at least start building up some hype. Not much has even been spread around on the white-wolf forums except the usual BS arguments that immature players make over shit they have no idea what is gonna happen with. I poured over the web again today and was glad to see someone had made a site to help keep us informed. Well as informed as white-wolf and ccp want to make us.

AOC Player - This is not the old world of darkness this MMO is based on. Its the New World Of Darkness.
Så Masquerade modern or Dark Age version will not be used. The old line has been finished for years - WW would not support that in a new computer game.
